Bake German Christmas Biscuits with Caroline Self
Updated: Oct 23
My mother was German and my father English. Growing up we celebrated on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, blending two sets of traditions. Historically, in Germany, each state had their own biscuit recipes, over the years my mother collected them and at Christmas would make them and share them with family and friends as was her custom. When she passed away, I thought it a good tradition to carry on.
When I wrote Pookins Saves Santa I put a bit of her into the story and mentioned her biscuits. This led to a seperate book where her recipes, her knitted slipper pattern and a few gift ideas from me feature.
You will find a few recipes in blogs below, the rest are in "Mrs Miggings Little Book of Christmas" available on Amazon or via my Portfolio page.
Essential Ingredients for German Christmas Biscuits
Before diving into the recipes, it’s essential to gather the right ingredients. Here are some staples you’ll need:
Flour: All-purpose flour is commonly used, but you can experiment with different types for unique textures.
Butter: High-quality unsalted butter adds richness to the biscuits.
Sugar: Granulated sugar is standard, but brown sugar can add a deeper flavor.
Eggs: Fresh eggs help bind the ingredients together.
Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are popular choices for flavoring.
Nuts: Almonds and hazelnuts are often ground and added for texture and taste.
Chocolate: Dark or milk chocolate can be used for dipping or drizzling.

Tips for Perfect Christmas Biscuits
Quality Ingredients: Always use high-quality ingredients for the best flavor.
Chill the Dough: Chilling the dough helps prevent spreading during baking.
Experiment with Flavors: Don’t be afraid to add your twist with different spices or extracts.
Presentation Matters: Use festive plates and decorations to make your biscuits visually appealing.
The Tradition of Sharing
In Germany, it’s customary to share these biscuits with friends and family. The act of giving baked goods is a way to express love and gratitude. Consider packaging your biscuits in decorative boxes or tins to share with neighbors or coworkers.
Hosting a Biscuit-Baking Party
Why not gather your friends for a biscuit-baking party? Here’s how to host a successful event:
Set a Date: Choose a date that works for everyone.
Plan Recipes: Decide on a few recipes to try together.
Gather Supplies: Make a list of ingredients and tools needed.
Create a Festive Atmosphere: Play holiday music and decorate your space.
Enjoy Together: Bake, taste, and share stories while you work.
Storing Your Christmas Biscuits
To keep your biscuits fresh, store them in an airtight container. Most biscuits can last for several weeks, making them perfect for holiday gifting. You can also freeze the dough for later use, allowing you to bake fresh biscuits whenever the mood strikes.
Conclusion
Baking German Christmas biscuits is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday. You can create delicious treats that not only taste great but also bring joy to your loved ones. So gather your ingredients, invite some friends, and start a new holiday tradition this year. Happy baking!
